Therapeutic massage is a general term that describes any type of massage modality that helps relieve pain, reduce stress, and work on a specific problem—such as a frozen shoulder. Massage therapy is manual manipulation of soft body tissues (muscle, connective tissue, tendons and ligaments) to enhance a person’s health and well-being. People seek massage therapy for a variety of reasons – to reduce stress and anxiety, relax muscles, rehabilitate injuries, reduce pain, and promote overall health and wellness.

SWEDISH MASSAGE

Swedish massage therapy is the modality that comes to mind when most people think about massage. One of the primary goals of the Swedish massage technique is to relax the entire body. Total body relaxation is accomplished by rubbing the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. Swedish massage therapy goes beyond relaxation and is exceptionally beneficial for increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, decreasing muscle toxins, and improving circulation and flexibility while easing tension. Additional Swedish massage techniques include circular pressure applied by the hands and palms, firm kneading, percussion-like tapping, bending and stretching.

Sports Massage is geared towards all types and classes of athletes and focuses on areas of the body that are overused and stressed from repetitive and often aggressive movements. Sports massage uses a wide variety of techniques to increase an athlete's physical performance and includes a lot of stretching to provide relief from overworked muscles. Athletes have discovered that sports massage promotes flexibility, reduces fatigue, improves endurance, helps prevent injuries and prepares their body and mind for optimal performance. For anyone participating in regular physical activity, sports massage therapy on a regular basis may be a great addition to your normal regimen.

TRIGGER POINT mASSAGE THERAPY

Trigger point massage therapy is designed to alleviate a given source of trigger point pain through cycles of isolated pressure and release. For trigger point therapy, the recipient actively participates through deep breathing and identifies the exact location and intensity of the discomfort.

The benefits and typical results of trigger point massage are aimed at releasing constricted areas in the muscles to alleviate pain. Trigger point therapy can be beneficial in as little as one massage session. Moreover, receiving massage with trigger point therapy on a routine basis can help with the management of pain and stress from chronic injuries.

DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE

Similar to Swedish massage, Deep Tissue Massage encompasses a deeper pressure that is beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension. The focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia (the protective layer surrounding muscles, bones and joints). This technique is excellent for chronic pain, spasms, injury management, range of motion, and flexibility.

Massage therapists may use fingertips, knuckles, hands, elbows, and forearms during a deep tissue massage. It is important to breathe

After the massage, you may feel some stiffness or soreness, but it should subside within a day or so. Be sure to contact your massage therapist if you have concerns or if you feel pain after having a massage.

Drinking water after the massage may help to flush the metabolic waste from the tissues.

PRENATAL MASSAGE

Massage therapy during pregnancy is a great complementary option for prenatal care. Prenatal massage is a healthy way to reduce stress and promote overall wellness. Prenatal massage delivers relief from many of the normal discomforts experienced during pregnancy, such as backaches, stiff neck, leg cramps, headaches and edema (swelling). Prenatal massage reduces stress on weight-bearing joints, encourages blood and lymph circulation, helps to relax nervous tension -- which aids in better sleep -- and can help relieve depression or anxiety caused by hormonal changes.

While a massage can't promise that your newborn will sleep through the night, it can provide you with a better night's sleep both during pregnancy and afterwards. Regular massage therapy not only helps diminish anxiety and discomfort but boosts relaxation as well. This ultimately can lead to improved sleep patterns.
